A synagogue is a building of a confident and active community. It urbanized and elevated its environment. The widest possible society needs to be addressed in order to re-integrate the place into the intellectual and cultural life of Sopron. We build it to be suitable for this.
It is of the utter importance being able to accommodate as many activities as possible (concerts, exhibitions, school-related performances, family events, etc). Also an obvious aspect of the planning was to keep in mind the past and original purpose of the house, which is still in demand today by the Jewish community in Sopron. We do not want to exclude from long-term planning the possibility that a growing community want to maintain the building with its tradition and historical past.
All the newly introduced element and transformations are rooted in the history of the place. The full width of the plot opens towards the park. The Great Hall is a venue for community events, it gets a full-width breakthrough on the back facade wall towards the courtyard, the inside of the hall gets black paint. The upstairs small room is home to exhibitions and smaller group performances, it's color is blue. The backyard becomes an expanded common area of the house. During the summer, it can serve as an outdoor event space, during the day it acts as a café, which helps the daily operation of the building. The yard can be covered with sailcloth.
Destroyed elements will not be reconstructed.
